At a time when many Illinois families are tightening their budgets, state Democrats are proposing a $6 billion tax increase to support a significant expansion of government. This plan includes what could become the largest state budget in Illinois history.

Governor JB Pritzker’s proposed budget is now nearly $15 billion larger than when he initially took office. The funding for this expansion would come from new and increased taxes on digital advertising, capital gains, corporate income, and estates.

Illinois already holds the highest overall tax burden in the United States. These proposed taxes could lead to higher consumer costs, deter investment, and create challenges for family-owned farms and businesses.

Republicans have expressed concerns about plans to use some of the new revenue to expand government benefits, including programs for individuals who are in the country illegally.

“While Democrats are pushing tax hikes, growing government, and prioritizing programs that hurt the very people they claim to represent,” Senate Republicans stated they are committed to advocating for “working families” by fighting for lower taxes and more opportunities so that people can afford to remain in Illinois.
