Legislation establishing the Care for Retired Police Dogs Grant Program has been signed into law in Illinois. The program aims to assist with veterinary expenses for retired police K9s throughout the state.
Under House Bill 3140, handlers or adoptive families of eligible retired police dogs can receive up to $1,500 annually as reimbursement for veterinary costs. To qualify, a K9 must have served at least five years, or three years if injured while on duty.
Funding for the grant will come from sales of Illinois’ new K-9 Memorial License Plate. There is no cost to taxpayers. The program will begin only if at least 2,000 license plate requests are made by January 2028.
The law intends to recognize the contributions of police dogs and reduce financial challenges faced by those caring for them after their service.
