Thousands of homeschooling families gathered at the Illinois State Capitol to voice their opposition to House Bill 2827. The bill, which has progressed through the Education Policy Committee with an 8-4 vote, saw all House Republicans voting against it.
House Bill 2827, referred to as the “Homeschool Act,” proposes new regulations for homeschooling families. These include mandatory forms, educational portfolios, and potential criminal penalties for those who do not comply.
Parents have expressed significant concern over the bill, viewing it as a threat to their rights to educate their children without government involvement. Critics argue that it could diminish parental control and lead to further restrictions on homeschooling.
State Senator Sue Rezin commented on the bill’s implications, stating that it “threatens to undermine the freedoms of parents who choose homeschooling.” She added that many are worried this could be just the start of increased government intrusion into private education.
