In a move to combat the increasing threat of synthetic drugs in Illinois, the Senate has approved legislation aimed at regulating xylazine more strictly. Xylazine, a potent animal tranquilizer, is becoming more common in illegal drug supplies.
Senate Bill 1773 proposes an amendment to the Illinois Controlled Substances Act to classify xylazine as a Schedule III controlled substance. This action addresses the rising number of overdose cases linked to the drug, often called the “zombie drug.” The bill seeks to enhance criminal penalties for unlawful possession or distribution of xylazine while ensuring protections for its legitimate use in veterinary and wildlife contexts.
According to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, xylazine was involved in 45 overdose deaths in 2020, with numbers exceeding 200 by 2022. Although not approved for human use, xylazine is frequently used to boost the effects of other drugs, posing significant risks and treatment challenges.
The legislation will now proceed to the House for further consideration.
