Legislation aimed at supporting pediatric cancer research in Illinois was introduced on Mar. 16, proposing the creation of a dedicated fund to advance efforts against childhood cancer.
The bill, Senate Bill 3954, seeks to establish the Illinois Pediatric Cancer Fund within the State Treasury Department. The fund would provide grants for research, prevention, and treatment initiatives related to pediatric cancer. Eligible recipients include physicians, hospitals, laboratories, universities, and other organizations working on childhood cancer research.
According to the proposal, the Department of Healthcare and Family Services would manage the fund and oversee a grant program focused on scientific innovation in pediatric cancer. Funding sources could include legislative appropriations as well as private donations and contributions.
The legislation also includes measures for transparency by requiring annual reports from the department to the General Assembly detailing how funds are allocated and progress made in research projects. Additionally, a portion of the fund may be used for promoting awareness and encouraging further donations to support ongoing research opportunities in Illinois.
Rezin, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2010 to represent the state’s 38th Senate District, replacing previous state senator Gary G. Dahl according to Wikipedia.
If passed into law, SB 3954 could increase resources available for pediatric cancer research across Illinois while providing oversight on how funds are distributed.
