In a June 15 Facebook post, Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) cheered the passage of legislation that allows students to earn dual credits.

“Proud to have sponsored legislation that would create more opportunities for high school students to access academic courses and credits previously unavailable to them. #OurFuture #38thSenateDistict #Education,” Rezin posted.

In her post, Rezin shared a link to a Shaw Local story that explained how the legislation could help more students. The bill allows high school students who may not meet the community college’s academic eligibility requirement to enroll in their dual credit course to receive high school credits.

The bill was signed into law on June 10. It allows instructors, in coordination with their higher learning partner, to differentiate instruction by credit section, and requires that instructors raise their credentials by Jan. 1, 2025. The bill also requires the Board of Higher Education to report information concerning the professional development plans of instructors.

The bill also requires high schools to establish procedures to notify students enrolled in dual credit courses if they are eligible for both college and high school credits or just a high school credit.
