Illinois Education Association Minooka Region issued the following announcement on Aug. 14.
The Illinois Education Association (IEA) today released the following statement from IEA President Kathi Griffin on Governor Bruce Rauner signing HB 5771, HB 5196, HB 5202, SB 1829, SB 3536, SB 2658 and HB 4742:
“While the Illinois Education Association is pleased Governor Bruce Rauner signed several bills that may help education, including IEA initiative HB 4742, we believe none of these bills aside from HB 4742 will have an impact on the teacher shortage. These bills fall short of what will really encourage more teachers to join the profession, and that’s being fairly compensated for the great work they do. Once again, we find the governor promoting himself as a “friend to education” but not addressing the real issue – the $40,000 minimum teacher salary bill (HB 5175). We find it curious that there was no mention of this bill during the governor’s education charade at the Illinois State Fair when the deadline for him to act on the bill is just two weeks away. We strongly encourage him to sign the bill and show, by his actions, that he supports and respects the hard working public educators in our state.”
