Coal City Community Unit School District 1 issued the following announcement on Oct. 4.
Students in 5th grade have been listening to and learning about music from various cultures from around the world. They are learning that in many places music making sounds is thought of very differently than we do in our culture here in the United States.
Fourth grade students were excited to begin the year learning how to hold and play the ukulele. They started with the soprano ukuleles (the smallest) and learned the three chords needed to play the song “Lava” from the Pixar short of the same name. They then experimented with the baritone ukuleles which are tuned differently than the sopranos and require different fingerings. The students then moved on to a unit covering Dynamics (louds and softs) and Tempos (speeds). They are very motivated to master these concepts in order to quickly move on to playing the ukuleles again and learning new songs!
