Coal City Community Unit School District 1 issued the following announcement on Oct. 12.
For the first 8 minutes of each Health class, Ms. Cumming and Mr. Monbrum’s 4A students get down to business with playing games and having fun!
In an initiative to incorporate more consistent focus on mental health, we’ve decided to show our students what it can do for their moods by giving just a few minutes of their day to PLAY (or relax). There are also days when students come in and we do some silent meditation to replace the 8 Minutes of Fun, but regardless of the activity, they’re focusing in on taking that short period of time to do something to serve their minds & inner selves.
By showing our Health students this one quick and easy way to add some self-care to their busy days, we’re hoping to pass along a very powerful message that will stick with them, even after freshman Health. It’s very easy to get lost in the chaos and rush of a busy afternoon; our teachers and students at CCHS will tell you how much is squeezed into a seven-hour day at school- BUT, when we make a concentrated effort to include 8 Minutes of Fun into the start of every single 4A class, we’re showing them that you can always make time for fun, or relaxation, or any other style of self-care.
