Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Oct. 19.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the public comment period on the scope of
its environmental review of an application by Interim Storage Partners to construct and operate a
consolidated interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Andrews County, Texas. The new
deadline for comment is Nov. 19.
The extension was announced in a notice in the Federal Register published
Oct. 19. A notice published on Sept. 4 officially reopened the scoping period for the environmental
impact statement, which had been suspended at the request of the applicant.
The application was initially filed by Waste Control Specialists in 2016. The company
requested the NRC suspend its review in April 2017, pending the anticipated sale of the company.
WCS was acquired by J.F. Lehman & Co. in January 2018. In March, WCS and Orano, an international
nuclear supplier, formed Interim Storage Partners as a joint venture to take over the spent fuel storage
project. The new company submitted a revised application to the NRC in June.
