The students are enrolled in the Gateways course as a semester curriculum. They are introduced to different childcare opportunities, health/nutrition guidelines, behavior management techniques, as well as child development from birth to age nine. Each of those modules are designed to assist the students in Early Childhood develop strategies when dealing with young children. An additional module that we send a lot of time on is personal and professional development.
As well as finishing the Level 1 training, first year students will go through a SIDS module, Shaken Baby Syndrome, as well as passing the State Mandated Reporter Training. By receiving the Level 1 certification, the students are qualified to enter the workforce at any of the local childcare facilities. It will also move them up on any of those facilities’ pay scale and moves them to the head of the hiring line. After passing the qualifying exams, the students will leave the first year of Early Childhood with the following certificates: Level 1 training, SIDS, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and State Mandated Reporter as well as their clinical hours.
