COAL CITY HIGH SCHOOL: Honors English III
Coal City High School issued the following announcement on Nov. 21.
Students in the Honors English III class of Mr. Wills prepared debates as a culminating activity to The Crucible unit. Students helped to create and then choose a debatable topic concerning the play and then aligned themselves on the “Pro” or “Con” side of the issue.
The Crucible is a work of historical fiction written by renowned, contemporary playwright Arthur Miller. Miller uses the basic structure of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692 Massachusetts to create a story of intrigue, murder, and social disorder. The play also serves as a work of social protest as Miller draws parallels to the happenings in Salem to the societal upheaval brought about by Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Red Scare tactics used to root out the perceived Communist threat during the 1950’s when Miller wrote the play.
