DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 2: Revised with New Filing Deadline: NRC Accepts Application for Subsequent License Renewal of Surry Power Station Reactors

Appliction

Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Dec. 19.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted for review an application from Virginia

Electric and Power Company (Dominion Energy Virginia) to extend for an additional 20 years the

renewed operating licenses of Surry Units 1 and 2, located near Surry, Va. Dominion submitted its

subsequent license renewal application on Oct. 15.

The application, less proprietary details, is available on the NRC website. Dominion is seeking a

subsequent renewal for the Surry units, approximately 17 miles northwest of Newport News, Va. The

NRC approved the initial license renewal in March 2003, with Unit 1 currently licensed to operate

through May 25, 2032, and Unit 2 through Jan. 29, 2033.

Accepting the application for review, or “docketing” the application, does not indicate whether

the Commission will approve or reject the request. More information about subsequent license renewal

is available on the NRC website.

The NRC has published in the Federal Register a notice of opportunity to intervene in an

adjudicatory hearing. Petitions to intervene in a hearing must be filed by Feb. 15, 2019, by anyone

whose interest may be affected by the proposed license renewal and who wishes to participate as a

party in the proceeding. More information on the hearing process is available on the NRC website.

(Note: The filing deadline for hearing petitions was revised and extended in a Federal Register

notice published Dec. 17.)
