Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.
Several thousand people are expected to attend the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s largest
public technical meeting – the 31st Annual Regulatory Information Conference to be held March 12-14
in North Bethesda, Md.
The conference, which will be jointly hosted by NRC offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and
Nuclear Regulatory Research, will focus primarily on innovation and transformation. Attendees will
notice changes to the standard conference format, including the introduction of a mobile application for
live polling and real-time feedback. The app for RIC 2019 also will allow participants to create a
customized agenda, as well as view and download conference materials.
NRC Chairman Kristine L. Svinicki and Executive Director for Operations Margaret M. Doane
will open the conference with an “armchair conversation” moderated by the Office of Nuclear Reactor
Regulation Director Ho K. Nieh, Jr., and the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research Director Ray
Furstenau. The conversation will focus on key topics facing the agency.
This year’s keynote speaker will be inventor and visionary Nathan Myhrvold, founder and chief
executive officer of Intellectual Ventures, who is experienced in innovative and transformative
technologies. Myhrvold will compare his experiences to NRC’s innovation and transformation
initiatives as the agency adapts to the evolving nuclear industry and the future regulatory environment.
Attendees will hear from NRC Commissioners Jeff Baran, Stephen G. Burns, Annie Caputo and
David Wright, who each will provide plenary remarks. Separately, Svinicki, Baran, Wright and Caputo
will chair individual technical sessions, a change to the previous panel format.
The conference will bring together representatives from more than 30 countries, nuclear power
plant owners and operators, nuclear materials users, other interested stakeholders and Congressional
staffers.
The full conference program is available on the NRC’s website, including registration hours,
badge protocol, parking and security. Information on how to obtain the app will also be available on the
website. The event is free and open to the public.
The conference will be held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center,
5701 Marinelli Road, North Bethesda.
