DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 2: NRC Announces Public Meetings Dates and Venues for Community Advisory Boards Near Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants

Publicmeeting

Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Aug. 23.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced the dates and locations for public

meetings to be held this summer and fall to receive input regarding best practices for community

advisory boards associated with decommissioning nuclear power plants.

The Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act, signed into law in January, included

a requirement that the NRC submit a report to Congress on best practices for community advisory

boards associated with nuclear power plants. The act requires the NRC to hold a minimum of 10

public meetings in locations that ensure geographic diversity across the United States, with priority

given to states that request a public meeting and have a nuclear power reactor currently undergoing

the decommissioning process. The NRC staff sought public comment in March on where to hold

these meetings.

The dates and locations have been scheduled for meetings near the following plants. The

hyperlinks provide additional information regarding the individual meeting notices.

Palisades, Aug. 21, Benton Harbor, Mich.

Humboldt Bay, Aug. 26, Eureka, Calif.

Diablo Canyon, Aug. 27, San Luis Obispo, Calif.

More information about the public meetings and the best practices report is available on the

NRC’s webpage dedicated to this project. The staff conducted a webinar Aug. 8 to provide people

living in other parts of the country an opportunity to provide comments. The webinar presentation

slides are available on the NRC website.

The results of these meetings, along with any data received as a result of the NRC’s other

information collection activities, will be captured in a best practice report to be submitted to

Congress by July 14, 2020.
