Gardner S Wilmington Township High School District 73 Board of Education met February 19

Gardner S Wilmington Township High School District 73 Board of Education met Feb. 19.

Here is the agenda provided by the board:

PUBLIC COMMENT:

No public at tonight’s meeting – no public comment.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:

Principal, Mr. John Engelman, discussed the following:

• Feb. 12th was an 11:30 AM early dismissal for students, and the teachers spent the afternoon in training sessions. We had staff from the IL Federation of Teachers present on adverse childhood experiences.

They discussed building relationships with students.

• Feb. 5th our English teachers attended a conference. Now these teachers will present what they learned to our remaining staff to use in any classroom setting.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT(S):

Athletic Director, Mr. John Engleman, discussed how good our winter sports were doing:

• Boys Varsity Basketball team record is now 16 – 11. They have won the last 7 out of 9 games.

• Girls Varsity Basketball team record is now 28 – 4. This is the most wins in the History of GSW. They placed 2nd in our Conference. They won the Regional. The last time winning a Regional was 2008. The team is now in the super sixteen and play Thursday night, Feb. 20th at 7:00 pm. Congrats to Mady Storm who advanced in the 3-point shoot-out. She is participating Thursday night before the Girls Varsity Basketball team plays.

• Color Guard qualified for State and went to the IDTA State in Springfield on Feb 15. They won – State Champs for 1A. This is the first time in school history.

• Spiritline Team placed 2nd in Sectionals, they placed 24th at the IHSA State and placed 2nd in the Pom 1A Category at IDTA state.

• Scholastic Bowl – they placed 3rd at the RVC competition and just placed 4th at the Masonic Bowl in Dwight. We have started to build this program back. Two years ago, we did not even have a team. This year’s team has been doing a phenomenal job this season, and proving that hard work and good teamwork goes a long way!

• We held an All School Assembly on Tuesday, Feb. 18th to recognize all of our winter sports accomplishments.

Mr. Engelman also noted that he had received two separate e-mails from officials praising our Scorebook and Scorekeeper, our boys’ basketball team for great sportsmanship and the hospitality of our Athletic Director.

Academics Services Coordinator, Ms. Angel Dallio, submitted her report electronically to the board. Technology Director, Mr. John Williamsen, submitted his report electronically to the board.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS REPORT: Mr. Josh DeLong stated he would review any building and grounds issues during the action items.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Mr. DeLong presented on the following: • GAVC Director Award winners for the month of January:

a. Nathan Weese – Criminal Justice

b. Kyle Haubenstricker – Culinary Arts

• Threat Assessment Team and Protocol – Full teams from both the GSW and BES attended a full day training with experts on Friday, Jan. 17th at Maria’s Ristorante & Pizzeria in Morris. There are now steps in place / protocol to follow.

• ISBE Financial Recognition – GSW HS has received a 3.65 on a 4.0 scale.

• RFP (Request For Proposal) for guaranteed Energy Savings Contract – Mr. DeLong discussed working with a performance contractor.

BOE MEMBERS REPORTS:

Board member, Cindy Gerber, asked about the upcoming Superintendent and Principal evaluations, which are usually done every Spring in either March or April. The board discussed how this process will work and if an extra meeting will need to be added.

ACTION ITEMS:

• Approve Supplemental JV Baseball Coach – Mr. Chris Halpin

• Approve Supplemental Varsity Baseball Coach – Mr. Trevor Sampson

• Principal’s 3-year Contract – TABLED until next month

• Approve Cell Phone Stipend – Mr. Wally Debelak

• Renew Milk Program Contract with Clover Leaf Farms

• Appoint Superintendent, Mr. Josh DeLong, to being Tentative Budget for Fiscal Year 2021

• Renewal of Illinois Central Transportation Contract

• Approve 2020-2021 District Calendar

• Approve School Maintenance Project Grant

• Nick Morris Production Scholarship

• Approve Electrical Bid for gym lights

• Approve Floor resurfacing bid

• Approve Gym Painting bid

OTHER:

Advised Administration to send out a text / alert message about the SAT Prep Classes being held at Dwight Township High School, as GSW students have been included to attend.
