University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Senate met Feb. 10.

I. CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Senate was called to order at 3:10 pm with Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Andreas Cangellaris presiding and Professor Emeritus H. George Friedman, Jr. serving as Parliamentarian.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
02/10/20-01 The minutes of the December 9, 2019 meeting were approved as distributed.
III. PUBLIC COMMENT
No requests received.
IV. SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REMARKS
Professor Rob Kar (LAW), a faculty senator and Chair of the Senate Executive Committee (SEC), reminded senators that election of new senators is upcoming along with nominations to serve on Senate committees for next academic year.
V. CHANCELLOR’S REMARKS
Provost Cangellaris gave remarks in the Chancellor’s absence. Cangellaris reminded everyone of the information shared about the coronavirus sent via massmail. There are no cases here at the University of Illinois. University medical staff has been working with the Champaign Public Health District to keep the University and surrounding community safe and healthy. The most effective method of prevention against the virus is to wash hands and avoid close contact. Information will continue to be disseminated as soon as there is information to share.
Provost Cangellaris announced that former Illinois soccer coach Jill Ellis will be this year’s commencement speaker. Ellis has had an amazing career and we are very excited to have her back at Illinois. Ellis is an example of the enormous success can come from an Illinois experience.

On behalf of the Senate Committee on Equal Opportunity and Inclusion (EQ), Chair Pionke introduced and moved approval of proposal EQ.18.04.
Concern was expressed about the effort required to meet the training component.
Pionke replied that training would occur when an employee becomes a supervisor.
Concern was also expressed about mental health and accessibility for “unseen” disabilities. Cangellaris replied that Chancellor Jones addressed this issue in his State of the University Address and that there is significant movement forward in responding to the needs of those at Illinois.

IX. REPORTS FOR INFORMATION
02/10/20-91 SP.19.01* Proposed Revisions to the Statutes (USC ST-77)
SP Chair Gilmore noted that SP.19.01 has been reviewed by all three Senates and the document attached to SP.19.01 shows the proposed changes that will go forward and the changes that will not go forward. Most of the proposed changes approved by the Urbana-Champaign Senate were included. SP Chair Gilmore also noted that Standing Rule 8 allows the Senate to take jurisdiction of any item and direct the Senate or a Senate committee to take action as it sees fit.
