After months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grundy County Speedway re-opened on June 26, the Morris Herald-News reported.
The speedway’s general manager, Joe DeBello, said he is excited to be back.
“I think people are more than ready to come out and watch some good racing,” DeBello told the Herald-News. "We are going to err on the side of caution. We have social distancing guidelines in place, there are two dedicated people monitoring to make sure everyone adheres to the guidelines, there are signs up everywhere around the speedway.”
Other speedways throughout the state re-opened earlier in June, but DeBello said that the Grundy Speedway decided to stay closed a little longer after conferring with the Fair Board. He said the speedway wanted to ensure that all guests are as safe as possible.
“We went through the Grundy County Board of Health to make sure all of the guidelines were met,” DeBello said. “We are also part of the Illinois Motorsports Coalition, which worked with the state on what needed to be done for us to re-open.”
The speedway is also capping the number of guests at 35-percent capacity. Groups can only be seated with a maximum of 10 people, and social distancing guidelines are in place to keep guests safe.
