DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 2: NRC to Meet with Connecticut Nuclear Energy Advisory Council to Discuss Millstone Nuclear Power Plant Performance

Meeting

Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Mar. 11.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2020 safety performance of the Millstone Station during a virtual meeting with the Connecticut Nuclear Energy Advisory Council on March 18. The plant, operated by Dominion Nuclear, is in Waterford, Conn.

The meeting will begin at 4 p.m., Eastern time, with a presentation by the NRC staff. Following a discussion with NEAC, NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions from the public.

The meeting can be accessed by the public and media via Teams. For those without access to Teams, the telephone conference number is (301) 576-2978, passcode 934440395#.

Millstone Units 2 and 3 operated safely during 2020. At the end of the year, all inspection findings and performance indicators were green, or of very low safety significance. As a result, both units remain under the NRC’s normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year. The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance.

The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved.

Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight. Inspections are performed by three NRC resident inspectors and specialist inspectors from the Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa.

The annual assessment letter for Millstone, as well as the meeting notice, are available on the NRC website. Current performance information for Units 2 and 3 is also available and updated quarterly.
