Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Apr. 23.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will discuss the 2020 safety performance of the Vogtle nuclear power plant and provide an update on the two units under construction during a virtual meeting to be held April 28.
The event will begin at 3 p.m., Eastern time, led by the NRC staff responsible for conducting plant and construction inspections. Following the safety performance review, the NRC’s Vogtle Readiness Group will provide a construction update and information on the tentative transition to operations at Unit 3 at 4:15 p.m.

Plant Vogtle, operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co., is located near Waynesboro, Georgia, approximately 26 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia. Units 1 and 2 began operation in 1987 and 1989, and Units 3 and 4, under construction, received combined licenses in 2012.
The NRC determined that Vogtle’s operating units operated safely during 2020. At the end of the year, all inspection findings and performance indicators were green or of very low safety significance. Likewise, the NRC found that the two units under construction are being built in a safe manner. As a result, all four units are under the NRC’s normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of inspection hours each year.
The NRC Reactor Oversight Process and the Construction Reactor Oversight Process use color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant and construction performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
