Gardner - So. Wilmington Township High School District 73 Board of Education Met May 19.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Principal, Mr. John Engelman, reported on the following:

● April attendance was good, 95.7%

● We only had 1 detention during the month of April. Discipline has been down this year.

● Our Bass Fishing Team won sectionals and is headed to State this weekend. The winning team consisted of Ryan Olsen, Delaney Platt and Coach Jerry Olsen.

● The Spring Play was held on Sunday, May 2nd.

● Abby Beck received the RVC Scholar Athlete of the Year award with a $500 Scholarship.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS REPORT: Mr. Josh DeLong presented the following:

● Cafeteria work – We will start this summer project on Monday, May 24. Work will begin with painting the walls and poles. New paint colors will be white, black and orange. A new epoxy floor will be put in, existing fans will be taken down and the entire room will be re-arranged. The kitchen area will also receive a makeup including new kitchen equipment.

● Business Lab – CTE Grant – With the money we received from this grant, we have ordered 30- new Dell Desktop computers and new tables and chairs. We will also be painting and adding carpet to the lab this summer.

● Parking Lot – The parking lot will be redone next summer, summer of 2022. We will fix the potholes this summer to get us thru the 21-22 school year.

● 2nd floor lockers – We are in need of new lockers on the 2nd floor. Mr. DeLong will begin getting quotes for new locker for potentially next summer.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Mr. DeLong presented on the following:

● GAVC Director’s Award Winner:

o Lucas Maurisak – Automotive Technology for the month of April 2021

o Claire Hennessy – Cosmetology for the month of April 2021

● ESSR Funds Update – We will receive the ESSR III funds of $130,000 in July. ESSR II funds have currently been approved for after school tutoring, a classroom aide, improved ventilation, supplies and the purchase of a van for transportation.

● End of year discussion - Mr. DeLong wanted to again acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the staff during this difficult school year. Outside graduation went great and the weather was perfect. There was some discussion about whether that would become the new norm for graduation. That conversation will be revisited in the fall.

● Next year discussion – GSW intends to be completely in person next year and as back to normal as possible.

● School Board Conference = November 19-21, 2021. We received notice that the Conference will be held in-person and registration begins in June.

BOE MEMBERS REPORTS:

● Board members asked if we had any retiring teachers this school year? GSW does NOT have anyone retiring this school year. Ms. Spiezio and Mr. Engelman will be retiring in 2-years and Mrs. Kukman and Mrs. Heerdt have 3-years left.

● Hall of Fame – we will have this Induction Ceremony during next year’s graduation.

ACTION ITEMS:

● Hire Devin Tjelle for summer custodial work

● Hire Camron Carpenter for summer custodial work

● Accept Rebecca DeHeer’s resignation as SADD Sponsor

● Accept Patricia Boaz’s resignation as Co-Play Sponsor

● Approve Bid for West Flooring Company for carpet in Room 205 at a cost of $2,500

● Approve Non-Certified salary increases for 2021-2022 school year

● Approve Resolution to transfer budgeted line items within the Education Fund

● Approve Handbook changes, as presented

● Approve Photography Contract with Shayla Loring Photography
