University of Illinois System Senate Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion met Sept. 10.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

Present: Chair JJ Pionke, Kaamilyah Abdullah-Span, Jacob Doty, Neha Gothe, Yih-Kuen Jan, Patrobas Wafula, Giocanda Guerra Perez (ex officio)

Absent: Megan Burke, Yvette Johnson-Walker, Amysha Langley

I. CALL TO ORDER

A regular meeting of the Senate Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (EQ) was called to order at 11:30 am with Chair Pionke presiding.

II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Approval of the minutes of the April 9, 2021 meeting was deferred due to a lack of quorum.

III. PUBLIC COMMENT

No requests received.

IV. CHAIR’S REMARKS

Chair Pionke welcomed the returning and new committee members. Pionke asked the committee members to share topics that they may want the committee to discuss or people the committee members may want to invite to future meetings.

V. OLD BUSINESS

EQ.20.05, Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Resolution

No discussion.

EQ.21.01, Resolution on Revised Diversity Statement (EQ.13.01)

This proposal will be discussed at the next meeting.

VI. NEW BUSINESS

EQ.21.04, 2020-2021 Annual Report of the Senate Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The committee reviewed the Annual Report and it will be submitted for inclusion on the October 20, 2021, Senate agenda.

Topics of discussion

• Climate Assessment Plans – Demographic Section

• Invite Diversity Committee Chairs from colleges on campus

Guerra Perez shared that some colleges have an Associate/Assistant Dean for Diversity and they meet on a regular basis with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

• Abdullah-Span shared that Bias Assessment Response Team has been moved from Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
