University of Illinois Senate Committee on Student Discipline met Feb. 28.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

Present: Carolyn Beck, Meghan Burke, Darin Eastburn, David Forsyth, Pat Gill, Merinda Hensley, Yuan-Xiang Pan, Zackary Landers, Hannah Thomas, Patrobas Wafula, Ashley Winters and Justin Brown (ex officio)

Staff: January Boten, Rony Die, Eric Gorecki, Debra Imel, Abisola Smith, Robert Wilczynski, and Mariah Young

Absent: Arne Fliflet, Marius Junge, Anushya Iyer, and Alison Green

1. Call to Order

A regular meeting of the Senate Committee on Student Discipline was called to order at 3:19 p.m. by Darin Eastburn. Chair Pat Gill presiding.

2. Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the January 31, 2022, meeting were approved as distributed by roll call vote. Landers motioned to accept the minutes, Beck seconded.

3. Public Comment

No requests received.

4. Chair’s Remarks

Chair Gill and Brown had no opening remarks.

5. Old Business

a. Brown remarked on need for subcommittee applicants, including grad students. Additional recruitment will be done in fall 2022, if necessary. Boten remarked the application deadline has been extended through March 4.

b. Agenda item B - Sanctioning guidance was not discussed.

6. New Business

a. Brown remarked on the current Academic Integrity policy being used by the colleges. Brown introduced an Academic Integrity Procedure being developed (by a team) to assist the colleges. The goal is to develop a robust, defined, and consistent procedure. The procedure will improve the fairness and flow of the process (see attachment). Brown asked the Committee for feedback on the appeal section of the procedure.

Forsyth remarked that the current process is full of confusion and disorder.
