Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) urged her constituents to show their gratitude to police officers in a May 16 Facebook post.
"It is National Police Week! Thank you to the brave men and women in blue for putting themselves in danger to help keep our communities safe. If you see a police officer this week, please be sure to thank them for their service," Rezin wrote.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund explains that National Police Week started with a proclamation from President John F. Kennedy in 1962 declaring May 15 National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. It was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962. National Police Week pays recognition to law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.
According to the Illinois Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) National Police Week was marked in Washington, D.C., with a candlelight vigil hosted by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and the National Police Survivors' Conference at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center.
This year, the Illinois Police Officers Memorial Ceremony in Springfield was held on May 5 at the State Library.
