Gardner-South Wilmington High School #73 Board of Education met May 18

Gardner-South Wilmington High School #73 Board of Education met May 18.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

PUBLIC COMMENT:

Public addressed the board in “Closed Session” tonight.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Mr. Engelman discussed the following:

• Youth Philanthropy – This group is led by Mrs. Kukman and has 25 student members. They meet once a month, starting in November. This group listens to guest speakers from the Grundy County area, explaining how they help the community and what they do with their monetary donations. At the end of the school year, the Youth Philanthropy group receives $5,000 from the Community Foundation of Grundy County to donate to local charities. This allows our students the wonderful opportunity to award non profits grants. The students decide how much money they will donate to each group. The Annual Banquet was held at the Morris Moose on Tuesday, May 10th.

• Gradation Top 10 Rank = Due to an error, Gardner-South Wilmington High School would like to recognize 2022 graduate Bethani Nicoletti. She had a perfect 4.0 grade point average and based on our school's tie-breaking process, she was ranked 8th in her class. Mr. Engelman discussed what happened with the student and her GAVC grade and how it was corrected. Bethani’s photo and a write-up was sent to The Paper so she can be recognized.

DIRECTORS’ REPORTS: None at this time.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS REPORT: Mr. Josh DeLong discussed the following:

• Parking Lot Update: There will be a pre-construction meeting held with D Construction to discuss the start-date of the parking lot. We hope to start early June.

• Boiler Update: This project is currently on hold. Mr. DeLong informed the board members that Gardner Grade School will charge us $2,000 for their used boiler. The company that will tear down the boiler, bring it to GSW, re-build it and install for us to use wants to charge us $38,000 for the labor fees. Mr. DeLong wants to get another quote from a different company. Another option is getting a brand new fully installed boiler for around $60,000. We will discuss again at next month’s meeting.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Mr. DeLong presented on the following:

• GAVC Director’s Award Winners:

o Blake Patterson – Welding II – Blake is a Senior and this is his 2nd year at GAVC.

o Tyler Ambrogio – Engineering II – Tyler is a Senior and this is his 2nd year at GAVC.

• Lunch Monitor / RTI – The Problem Solving Team meets once a month. They look at how we can help students. One of their ideas is to hire a lunch monitor so that the teachers can be freed up to help with RTI and tutor students 1-on-1 or in smaller groups during that time. The board members agreed to hire a lunch monitor to replace teacher lunch monitors. Mr. DeLong will advertise for that position.

• End of year discussion – Prom and Graduation were both back to normal this year. Monday, May 23 will be our last full day of student attendance. Tues and Wed, May 24 and 25 will be FINAL EXAMS with an 11:45 AM early dismissal. Thurs, May 26 is Teacher Institute Day. This will conclude our school year.

• School Board Conference – Board members discussed who will be attending the Conference next school year. It will be held November 18-20 in Chicago.

BOE MEMBERS REPORTS:

Mrs. Pam Brooks informed the board members that both she and Sue Avery attended the GAVC meeting this month to represent GSW HS.
