On 09/24/2022, at approximately 12:30 AM, deputies with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Gippers Sports Club and Eatery located at 8455 E. Pine Bluff Road in Un-incorporated Coal City for shots fired that occurred in an outside pavilion bar area.
Upon arrival, deputies were advised that there were two victims in the shooting, and both were deceased.
One firearm was recovered on scene. (It was reported earlier 2 firearms were recovered, that was incorrect.)
Both victims died on scene as a result of their injuries. Victim number one is Darius D. Travis (age 33) from Joliet and victim number two is Dameonta D. Terry-Travis (age 25) of Joliet.
At approximately 1:50 AM, the Illinois State Police (ISP) responded to assist the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office in evidence collection and processing the crime scene. The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office activated the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force for assistance on scene to conduct interviews.
There was a large contingent of bar patrons inside the liquor establishment as well as a half dozen or more employees at the time of the shooting.
As of this writing, no one is in custody for this shooting, and members of the task force are continuing to follow up on additional leads. This appears to be a targeted act of violence and although the suspect/s are not in custody, we do believe there is no threat to the surrounding area.
Gippers will remain closed Saturday, September 24th and will re-evaluate their opening on Sunday, September 25th. The owners of Gippers are cooperating with police officials as this investigation is on going.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Grundy County Sheriffs Office at 815-942-6645.
