Sue Rezin, State Sen. of Illinois State Senate, Illinois General Assembly, expressed her concerns during a Joint Committee on Administrative Rules subject matter hearing on Oct 17th. Rezin corrected the record regarding the number of complaints lodged against classroom aides and the substantiation of those complaints.

According to Rezin, instead of 300 complaints, there were actually 214 complaints lodged. Out of those 214 complaints, only 23 were substantiated, which is significantly different from the previous testimony given a month prior. Rezin emphasized that the data provided to the committee was misleading and called into question the justification for enforcing certain rules.

Rezin also expressed frustration on behalf of private and licensed childcare programs, stating that they have not been given a voice in the decision-making process. While advocacy groups have been involved in discussions, the individuals actually working in the daycares feel overlooked.

State Rep. Sue Rezin has represented the 38th district in Illinois since December 2010. She serves on various committees, including the Early Childhood Education Committee, where she is the minority spokesperson.

In related news, Marc Smith, the former director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, recently resigned. Smith had faced multiple instances of being found in contempt of court for issues related to the timely placement of children in state care. The agency has also been the subject of several audits highlighting inadequate reporting of child abuse.

In July, the Joint Committee on Administration Rules criticized emergency rules implemented by the agency regarding daycares and aides in classrooms. The rule was subsequently suspended.

It remains to be seen how Rezin's concerns and the controversies surrounding the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will be addressed moving forward.
