Senate Minority Deputy Leader Sue Rezin (R-Morris) has announced two additional locations and dates for her "Safe Screens, Healthy Minds" initiative roundtables, as well as the launch of an online survey. The purpose of these events is to gather input from parents, educators, and mental health professionals throughout the state.
Rezin emphasized the importance of gathering feedback from as many Illinoisans as possible for her initiative. She stated, "Illinois is a large and diverse state with people from all different walks of life and perspectives."
The second roundtable, in partnership with House Minority Leader Tony McCombie and Regional Office of Education #4, will take place on Monday, February 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Loves Park City Hall Civic Center. The third event, in partnership with State Senator Terri Bryant, will be held on Thursday, February 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Township High School Auditorium. These two new events, along with the first event at the Yorkville Middle School Auditorium on Wednesday, January 31, will complete the currently scheduled roundtable series.
To ensure that all Illinoisans have an opportunity to provide their input, Senator Rezin has launched an online survey for those who are unable to attend the roundtables. Rezin explained, "This online survey will allow those individuals an opportunity to share their thoughts and stories."
The "Safe Screens, Healthy Minds" initiative aims to address the harmful effects of social media on children. Studies have shown that social media platforms can intensify issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and feelings of inadequacy. Additionally, these platforms can provide a venue for unwanted sexual advances on minors. Senator Rezin's ultimate goal is to directly address these concerns through the introduction and passage of legislation.
By hosting roundtables and providing an online survey, Senator Rezin is ensuring that the voices of Illinoisans are heard and considered in the development of solutions to the harmful effects of social media on children's mental health.
