The Illinois Senate has moved forward with legislation aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusivity for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers in public spaces. The bill, known as Senate Bill 1089 or Sami’s Law, is now set to be considered by the House.

Sami’s Law would mandate the installation of at least one publicly accessible adult changing station in the State Capitol building and all state rest stops. The legislation was sponsored by Senator Sue Rezin and originated from an initiative by one of her district staffers, Renee Abraham.

The bill is named after Renee's 26-year-old daughter, Sami, who lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. During the hearing process, Renee was given the opportunity to testify.

Initially introduced during a subject matter hearing in the Senate Executive Committee, the legislation was later incorporated into another bill to facilitate its passage.
