With winter approaching, Illinois residents are being urged to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This federally funded initiative aids low-income households in managing their energy bills.

Currently, applications are open for priority groups such as senior citizens, families with disabled members, those with children under five, and individuals at risk of disconnection. From November 1, all income-eligible households can apply.

LIHEAP offers one-time payments directly to energy providers to ease the financial strain of utility bills. Households do not need to be behind on payments to qualify; eligibility is based on income levels. For instance, a family of four with an annual income up to $62,400 may qualify for assistance.

For more information or to check eligibility, residents can visit helpillinoisfamilies.com or reach out to their local community action agency.
