A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Grundy County Sheriff's Office in Illinois on February 18, 2025. The request pertains to specific records related to inmates who have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at the Grundy Reporter requested documents and/or records that would shed light on this issue. This includes requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding civil enforcement, which are reportable under the TRUST Act and/or the Illinois VOICES Act.
In addition, we sought information about Immigration Detainers received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that are also reportable under these acts. These documents are crucial for us as they allow us to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public.
We believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information, we consider ourselves eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
It should be noted that we are members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating state and federal governmental agencies and leveraging Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to pull back the curtain on government actions and help inform the American electorate.
Our pursuit of transparency continues as we await a response from the Grundy County Sheriff's Office regarding our request.
