Proposed legislation in Illinois, referred to as the Homeschool Act, is drawing significant attention and controversy. The bill aims to enhance oversight of homeschooling families by requiring parents to meet specific educational qualifications, notify school districts upon beginning homeschooling, and provide evidence of teaching materials if concerns arise. Additionally, it extends registration requirements to private schools, which are currently voluntary.

The bill has sparked a strong response from the public and state lawmakers. Many homeschooling families have traveled to Springfield to voice their opposition. Critics argue that the new regulations would unnecessarily complicate and restrict parental freedom in educating their children according to personal values, needs, and beliefs.

The Homeschool Act has been assigned to the House Education Policy Committee for further consideration.
