Morris - Gwen Peggy Smart, a beloved educator and community leader, passed away peacefully at her home on March 7, 2025, at the age of 79 in Morris, Illinois. Born on May 28, 1945, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Gwen's legacy is marked by a lifetime of service and mentorship.

After graduating from Princeton High School in 1963, Gwen pursued her passion for teaching, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. She dedicated her career to educating young minds, starting as a gym teacher at Oswego Junior High School. Gwen's commitment to her students' well-being extended beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on generations.

A member of First Christian Church in Morris, Gwen's service and devotion to her community were unparalleled. For over twenty years, she shared her faith by teaching Sunday school, touching the lives of many with her love and guidance.

Gwen's selflessness and faith defined her character, inspiring all who knew her. Survived by her son Kirk Smart, sisters Jane Merkley and Kay Taylor, and cherished nieces and nephews, Gwen's legacy of love and devotion will forever be remembered.

Visitation for Gwen will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, followed by a Celebration of Life officiated by Pastor Nate Ferguson. A luncheon will be held at First Christian Church in Morris at 12:30 p.m.
