Legislation to ease regulations for disabled individuals has passed the Illinois Senate with unanimous approval. Current rules mandate that disabled individuals, or their guardians, submit a doctor's letter to the Secretary of State to obtain disability plates or parking decals.

Senate Bill 1256 aims to lessen this requirement by updating the certification only once every five years. It also allows licensed physical therapists to approve applications, potentially saving costs on doctor visits.

The bill received Senate approval on April 9, 2025, and is pending in the House.
