Illinois State Senators Jason Plummer and Terri Bryant have urged the withdrawal of Latoya Hughes' nomination as Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). They cite ongoing safety issues, staff endangerment, and inadequate leadership qualifications as reasons for their call.

During a press conference last week, the senators highlighted several systemic problems within the state's prison system. These include confirmed drug-related inmate deaths, an increase in staff assaults, and contraband entering through inmate mail without proper scanning. Despite warnings from correctional staff, necessary reforms have not been implemented. The lawmakers accused Governor Pritzker of prioritizing politics over effective public policy that ensures the safety of Illinois residents.

Additionally, the senators criticized decisions regarding cooperation with federal immigration authorities and the early release of violent offenders. They argue these actions have compromised public safety across Illinois.

State Senator Sue Rezin expressed her concern by stating, "Illinois has had enough. The people of this state deserve accountability from leadership and safety in their communities."
