Legislation aimed at supporting young farmers in Illinois has successfully passed through the General Assembly. Senate Bill 2372 introduces the Farmland Transition Commission, a new entity within the Illinois Department of Agriculture. This commission is designed to study and address challenges faced by individuals aged 25 to 40 who are looking to purchase or access farmland.

The commission will convene quarterly and is required to submit annual policy recommendations to both the Governor and the General Assembly until 2031. It will comprise agricultural leaders, policymakers, and young farmers from various parts of the state. Their role will be to evaluate existing programs and incentives, providing recommendations for improving land access, facilitating generational farm transfers, and ensuring long-term success for new and aspiring farmers.

Senate Bill 2372 received unanimous support in both chambers and now awaits approval from the Governor.
