Senate Republicans have criticized Governor JB Pritzker for his recent comments on redistricting in other states, questioning his credibility on the issue due to actions taken during his tenure in Illinois. The criticism comes as Pritzker has become more vocal about political debates beyond state lines.
Republicans point to Pritzker’s campaign pledge to support independent redistricting and veto gerrymandered maps. However, after taking office, he approved partisan maps created by Democratic lawmakers in 2021. These maps were drawn without public input and are seen by Republicans as a move to maintain Democratic control rather than ensure fair representation.
Critics argue that Pritzker’s current statements about fairness in redistricting lack authenticity given his record in Illinois. They suggest that his involvement in out-of-state debates is politically motivated rather than based on principle.
According to Senate Republicans, “if the rules only matter when his party benefits, it was never about voters or fairness.” They contend that instead of addressing concerns raised by previous actions, Pritzker continues with the same approach. “Illinois families deserve a transparent redistricting process, not more political games from Springfield,” they said.
Sue Rezin is among the Republican senators who have served since 2010 after being elected to represent Illinois’ 38th Senate District, succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
