The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has opened the application period for its Safe Routes to School program, which is designed to improve safety for students traveling to and from school. The program provides $12 million in federal funding this year for projects such as new sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and public education campaigns. Each grant can award up to $250,000.
Priority will be given to schools that serve low-income students and students with disabilities. Eligible applicants include school districts, municipalities, nonprofits, and planning organizations. Applications are due by October 13, with awards expected to be announced in the spring.
More information about the program can be found on the Safe Routes to School program homepage.
Sue Rezin has represented Illinois's 38th Senate District since her election in 2010, succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
