Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago, a new effort aimed at curbing illegal immigration. The initiative directs ICE officials to locate and detain violent criminal undocumented immigrants, including individuals identified as gang members, rapists, kidnappers, and drug traffickers. These individuals were released under policies established by Governor J.B. Pritzker’s administration.
In 2021, Governor Pritzker expanded the TRUST Act, which restricts state and local agencies from cooperating with ICE except in limited circumstances. This move received criticism from Republican legislators who argue it limits law enforcement’s effectiveness across Illinois.
State Senator Sue Rezin has voiced her opposition to these sanctuary state policies. "Governor Pritzker’s actions have put Illinois families at risk time and time again," said Rezin. "If Governor Pritzker and Chicago leaders refuse to do their jobs, the federal government has both the right and the duty to act."
Rezin is a Republican who was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2010 for the 38th District, succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
