Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was killed during an attack at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Kirk, 31, was shot as he prepared to speak to a group of mostly college students. The FBI reported on Friday, September 12, that a suspect had been taken into custody.
This incident follows a recent pattern of violence targeting political figures. In June, Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in their home. There have also been two assassination attempts against President Trump this year.
State Senator Sue Rezin offered condolences to Kirk’s family and loved ones after the shooting. She stated, "Violence has no place in political discourse." Rezin continued, "To do anything other than condemn such violence and intolerance is unacceptable."
Rezin has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 2010, representing the 38th Senate District after succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
