October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, focusing on encouraging screening, education, and prevention efforts for breast cancer, which is the second most common cancer among women in the United States.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes. The organization estimates that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. In 2025, it is projected that 316,950 women and 2,800 men in the country will receive a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer.

Early detection remains critical. The five-year survival rate for those whose breast cancer is found early stands at 99 percent. There are currently more than four million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.

"Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not only about acknowledging the impact of the disease but also about empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health." For further details on breast cancer, information can be found on the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s website.

Sue Rezin has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 2010, representing the state's 38th Senate District after succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
