Springfield lawmakers have passed Senate Bill 2111, a major piece of legislation aimed at addressing issues in Chicago’s public transit system. The bill was approved during the final hours of the fall Veto Session on October 31, following two years of public hearings and negotiations.

The measure introduces new revenue streams for transit funding, including a redirection of revenue from the state’s motor fuel sales tax. This aspect has drawn criticism from some legislators representing downstate districts.

State Senator Sue Rezin voiced strong opposition to the bill. “This proposal would strip critical funding from downstate infrastructure projects to bail out Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and his failing transit system,” she said. Rezin voted against the bill, stating, “This plan raises costs for families who can least afford it and takes more from our communities to cover for Chicago’s spending problems.”

Senate Bill 2111 will now be sent to the Governor for consideration.

Rezin has represented Illinois’ 38th Senate District since her election in 2010, succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
