In a recent legislative move, Democratic lawmakers in Springfield have advanced Senate Bill 1911, which proposes to “decouple” Illinois from certain federal tax relief measures. The bill has drawn criticism from Republican legislators who argue that it amounts to a tax increase on businesses and manufacturers during a period of economic recovery.

The proposed legislation would separate Illinois tax policy from federal relief efforts aimed at supporting business growth. Opponents say this change could undermine the state’s competitiveness as other states are lowering taxes and encouraging new investment.

Illinois currently has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Republican senators contend that raising taxes now could further harm job creation and discourage companies from establishing operations in the state. They warn that while neighboring states offer incentives for factories and jobs, Illinois risks sending a message that it is not open for business.

State Senator Sue Rezin commented on the proposal, stating, "Governor Pritzker and his allies are prioritizing short-term revenue over long-term economic stability. She argues that instead of creating jobs and helping families get ahead, Democrats are choosing yet another tax hike that raises costs, drives away opportunity, and makes it even harder for Illinois families to succeed."

Senate Bill 1911 will proceed to Governor Pritzker’s desk for consideration.

Rezin has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 2010, representing the 38th District after succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
