In the closing hours of the Illinois General Assembly’s fall Veto Session, Democratic lawmakers approved an “Energy Omnibus Bill” that removes existing caps on energy rate increases. The legislation could result in up to $8 billion in higher power bills for consumers.
Opponents argue that the new law will increase costs for households already facing high utility expenses. They also express concerns that the bill channels significant funds into special-interest initiatives and experimental technologies without clear benefits to affordability or reliability. Additionally, the measure reduces local authority by allowing large battery storage facilities to be constructed as close as 150 feet from homes or farms, with no opportunity for local governments to object.
State Senator Sue Rezin commented on the impact of the bill, stating, "Families across Illinois are already being crushed by rising costs, and instead of offering real relief, this proposal makes things worse." She added, "By removing these protections and giving unelected agencies unlimited power to raise rates, the legislation will make energy more expensive and less reliable for Illinois families."
Rezin has represented Illinois’ 38th Senate District since 2010 after succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
