Meeting808

Parent Teacher Advisory Committee met Sept. 18.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

A) Introductions- following were present: Mr. Burgess, Mrs. Shannon, Mrs. Edwards, Mr. Overbeck, Mrs. Eaker, Abbie Borgstrom, Mrs. Vermillion, Mrs. Puckett, Mrs. Lee, Officer Huettemann, Kameron Dransfeldt, Owen Burns, and Mr. Farrell.

B) Purpose of Committee- Mr. Farrell presented the key purposes of the PTAC. Members represent different interest groups including students, teachers, parents, student support services, resource officer, board members, and administration. Collectively we discuss concerns and issues that our students deal with. We then focus on our policies, rules, and procedures listed in the handbook that are aligned with the specific problem areas and make recommendations to the administration to update/change policies and procedures in our student handbook.

C) Review Student Model Handbook updates- the following updates are recommended by the IPA (Illinois Principal Association) student model handbook.

1. Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, an age-appropriate developmental screening and an age-appropriate social and emotional screening are required parts of each health examination.

2. Students may be excused from physical education courses based on medical or religious prohibitions. Excusal requests based on religious prohibitions must be in writing and must include a signed statement from a member of the clergy corroborating the religious basis for the request.

D) Discuss current MCHS discipline policies and other student issues.

Key Topics for discussion from last year’s PTAC-Round Robbin Activity

a. Book bags- Both Mr. Burgess and Mrs. Shannon spoke to this matter. They both felt that book bags can be a big disturbance in the classroom but teachers have started managing their classrooms with the idea that students are going to bring them. Students present give their opinion. They were in agreeance that most students do carry their book bags and is a huge convenience. MCHS will continue to allow book bags as teachers have grown to manage in their own classrooms.

b. Dress Code- Mr. Burgess will lead an activity at next PTAC meeting. The focus will be on other district dress codes and trying to come up with verbiage that entices our students to dress more on a business/causal/appropriate attire and is not a disruption to the educational process. Mrs. Vermillion suggested that dress code could be a topic covered in health class.

c. Truancy- Morris High school continues to work with county resources like the ROE and the states attorney offices. The communication over the last year has increased and looking at ways we can support one another. At this time, all processes and attendance policies meet state requirements.

E). Any new Items/Changes for Discussion in MCHS Discipline Policies – None at this time were added by any member.

F). Next meeting date November 20, 2017
