Illinois has introduced a new tax on online sports bets, impacting both consumers and the state's legal sports betting industry. Starting July 1, sportsbooks in Illinois are required to pay $0.25 for each of the first 20 million bets placed statewide annually and $0.50 for every bet thereafter.

FanDuel, one of the major operators in the state, has responded by announcing that it will implement a $0.50 fee on every wager beginning September 1. This decision comes after a significant tax increase last year that raised rates up to 40% for top operators.

The move is seen as an additional financial burden on consumers and raises concerns about its impact on the state's sports betting market.
