Republican lawmakers are urging for more transparency following reports indicating that Illinois may owe the federal government over $700 million annually due to high error rates in its administration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

SNAP offers food benefits to low-income families to aid their grocery budgets. However, Illinois has been identified as having one of the highest error rates in the country, ranking below 38 other states in payment accuracy.

Federal law mandates that states with error rates exceeding 10 percent must repay 15 percent of total SNAP benefits. According to USDA data, Illinois’ rate reached 11.56 percent in fiscal year 2024, placing it among the highest nationwide.

State Senator Sue Rezin is advocating for increased transparency and pressing the Administration to take immediate action to correct errors and curb fraud and abuse within the SNAP program.
