Support

Illinois Education Association Minooka Region issued the following announcement on Feb. 13.

Region 67 of the Illinois Education Association is recommending Lori Lightfoot for Mayor of Chicago in the Feb. 26 election.

The recommendation follows a recent candidate recommendation forum. Region 67 is made up of IEA members employed in the field of higher education in the Chicago area.

“Ms. Lightfoot spoke passionately, and personally, about the transformative possibilities of higher education. She also communicated strongly-held positions on important policy issues such as the need for drastic changes in how TIF funds are utilized and the need to adequately fund and maintain pensions because they represent promises that must be kept,” said Oscar Valdez, an IEA grassroots political activist.

Randy Miller, president of the 1000-member City Colleges of Chicago part-time faculty union, CCCLOC, praised Lightfoot’s “solid opposition to the program consolidation at City Colleges that has forced students to travel great distances across the city to receive their degree.”

Miller also took note of candidate Lightfoot’s “support for elected school boards at Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges and a more collaborative and pro-active approach to negotiations.”
