Morris Community High School District 101 Curriculum & Technology Committee met Oct. 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

In attendance: Craig Ortiz, Lynn Vermillion, Sam Shannon, Kim O’Malley, Kim Puckett, Kelli Simpson, Tom Anderson, JD Morrison

I. CALL TO ORDER- 4:30 PM ROLL CALL

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG

II. CURRICULUM COMMITTEE SESSION

A. Department Meeting Updates

a. New course proposals- STEM course proposal: additional credit potential beyond standard Math/Science credit. STEM 1 Skills Course to replace study hall. Half credit for the year to learn soft skills and dig deeper into advanced topics. Study hall time would only be affected 50% of the time.

b. Social Science Department changes for 2020-21: Current course = Western Civilizations Honors being piloted as AP European History. AP European History new AP course offered for 2020-21. New Western Civilizations course offered for sophomore year-long course combining Global Studies and World Cultures.

c. E-learning days- method for calling a snow day but providing electronic opportunities to continue some school activities and not add any days to the year. Plan to be discussed at the October board meeting and approved at the November board meeting. Paper options will be made available for limited access to internet or devices.

B. PSAT October 16th- sign-up for juniors, not a free solution

C. Seal of Biliteracy- led by Eva Schutter. Provides students with an opportunity to be certified to be multilingual for employment opportunities.

III. TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE SESSION 

A. Technology summer work updates

a. Network clean-up and optimization- consolidated switches providing easier management. Provides spare switches and increases speeds. Ran thousands of feet of cable for connecting switches and removing switches from classrooms.

b. Brought in over 400 Chromebooks and carts. Organized and inventoried all devices and deployed them in all classrooms that did not have carts.

c. Fiber optic to press box for security cameras and faster fiber internet for the school.

d. General summer maintenance of teacher machines, projectors, and classrooms.

B. Discussion on student technology survey

. Will provide data for grant opportunities, feedback for e-learning days, and general information for teachers as they plan their curriculum. 

C. LRC updates - Kelli Simpson

. Library upgrades: new whiteboard and new laminator.

a. Freshmen orientation: stressed book care and carrying IDs.

b. Textbook cleanup and maintenance during the summer is an ongoing process.

c. New fiction books available for students and being checked out.
