University of Illinois System Senate Committee on University Student Life met Sept. 10.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

I. CALL TO ORDER

A regular meeting of the Senate Committee on University Student Life (SL) was called to order at 11:00 am with Chair Alam presiding.

II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The minutes of the May 1, 2020, July 6, 2020 and August 4, 2020 meeting were approved as distributed by roll call vote. 

Yes: Fogelman, Hernandez Castaneda, Joshi, Kalita, Valenzuela Ramirez

No: None

Abstain: Alam, Swanson

III. PUBLIC COMMENT

No requests received. 

IV. CHAIR’S REMARKS

Chair Alam thanked the members for being available to meet over the summer. Chair Alam did introductions since there are new committee members. Chair Alam shared summary of topics the committee focused on last year.

V. VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS UPDATES (Brown Young)

Brown Young shared the following:

•Well Track Program will be launched shortly in the Illinois App. It’s designed to help students understand their mental health. Students will be connected to mental health access and assistance 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

•The Food Insecure Pantry (Campus Recreation) was used by students on campus at the end of week one. This is a pilot program housed at Campus Recreation. Other locations may be added in the future depending on need.

•Student Affairs is working with students (residing on campus and off campus) who have tested positive or need to be quarantined. In housing 118 students in isolation and 26 students in quarantine. Numbers are trending down for students who might have tested positive in the residence halls.

•Shield Team 30 members have been reaching out to the students (on campus and off campus) who have tested positive assuring that they have received information from Champaign-Urbana Public Health Department (CUPHD) or that they need to contact CUPHD; asking what their needs are and how can wesupport them

•Brown Young shared that McKinley Health Center is going to start their flu shot campaign in the next week or two.

VI. ISGPRESIDENT UPDATES (Perezchica)

Perezchica shared the following:

•Perezchica and the outgoing ISG President met with different administrators over the summer.

•ISG has finished filling cabinet positions and goal setting meetings. 

•Working wants to work on outreach to year. ISG is working on virtual engagement activities to include all students.

Martensen shared that the Provost’s Office has been working really hard getting things together for the Fall semester. There were three (3) online teaching academies over the summer with over 1,000 participants to get prepared for remote learning. In addition, Technology Services worked on an equipment loan program. 

VII. OLD BUSINESS

Topic of Discussion

•Student mental health

•Improvements to orientation (graduate students who may be international students; sexual misconduct survey) and 

•Student hunger issues

The committee will continue to discuss these topics in the upcoming year and invite stakeholders to attend future meetings. 

Kalita shared information PUSH (Presidents United to Solve Hunger). Kalita will send information to Chair Alam. 

Chair Alam discussed SL.20.10, Kingfisher Resolution. The students who wrote the Resolution would like the committee to support the Resolution. Chair Alam asked the committee if there were any concerns with the committee supporting the Resolution. A motion was made to support SL.20.10. The motion was seconded and no further discussion followed. The motion to support SL.20.10 was approved by roll call vote. Chair Alam will contact the students who submitted the proposal.
